Have you ever thought why are you not taking the next big step in life?

What are the actual fears that are holding you back from taking that next step towards something that you have always wanted to do? Most often than not I find that two major reasons always come into play. It’s you and it’s them.

Why Is It You?

I have often seen this as one of the biggest reasons in my own experience. People are so afraid of failure that they fear even starting out. They might not want to put themselves in a vulnerable position and then start doubting themselves and their abilities. At that stage, the fear turns into a conviction that maybe they do not have what it takes.

This leads to procrastination. I consider this as the silent killer of dreams.

The reasons for doing so are plenty. People procrastinate for a number of reasons and in a number of areas in life, but let’s talk about why it happens when your dreams are at stake.

There is an overwhelming amount of information online and offline today. Whether you want to become a writer or an entrepreneur, there are too many resources out there. The brain is left reeling with so much consumption that you don’t know where to start, especially if the information lacks structure. You keep telling yourself that you will start when you have a little more idea about it and eventually put it off for too long.

What can you do about this?

Nobody should go into the battlefield unprepared, hoping for the victory to just fall in their laps. Do your research before starting out, weigh your options, calculate the risks. Understand where you are at, and depending upon what is it that you have chosen to do, start even if you feel you aren’t ready yet. If you keep waiting, you will never be ready. The endless wait will not prepare you, it’s what you will learn on the job that will hone your skills. That is when the best kind of growth happens. Preparation is good, but it should not last forever.

Why Is It Them?

Sometimes the biggest hurdles on the road to success are not the lack of resources or talent, nor the huge number of people who are already in the business or even luck honestly. Sometimes the biggest hurdles can be demotivation from external sources, which diminishes your spirit and makes you too skeptical to even consider starting out.

Why does this happen?

In an era where so much free information is available online, people want to research on the fields that they are interested in. Thankfully there are so many experts available in the online world who share their knowledge and expertise without any qualms. It is upon the individual to imbibe that knowledge and understand the pros and cons of the field they are interested in.

Unfortunately, this virtual world also exposes us to half- baked knowledge. I have seen people who have hustled for a short while and given up, and upon doing so, have come to a conclusion that this job or this field of work just isn't worth it. Sharing your skills as a beginner in an area is more than fine, people who are just starting out might find that very relatable and helpful. But the former reaction is brimming with negativity, which if shared publicly, often kills the desire to do something similar.

The intention might not always be bad. Maybe, there might be some truth to their reasoning, but is it all true? Each individual might have a different story of why they couldn't make it. Maybe they lucked out, maybe their skills hadn't still reached full potential and they gave up too soon. But it is not in the best interest of anyone to provide conclusion-based information without fully understanding the nuances of that particular field.

What can we do about this..?

Let me answer this with a series of questions..

If someone says you can’t do it, will you just quit?

Will you let other’s fate decide your own?

Are you just going to succumb without fully understanding your potential?

If there are so many others who have already done it, there’s a chance you might too. Your own mindset and your beliefs matter above all. Understand what you should take in and what you should keep out. Your mind should be open for knowledge but closed for negativity.
